Is the self-help industry a fraud?

As strange as it may sound, I think about this question fairly regularly. The answer is: it depends.

Self-help is a multi-billion dollar industry. People are hungry for information that will help them make improvements in their lives. There is a lot of content out there. Some of it is excellent, and some of it is misleading.

Anything that promises a quick fix is bullshit. There is no way to create real transformation with an easy button. There is no way to transform your life in a few days. Now, can a short event that takes place over a few days be transformational? Absolutely. But what those experiences really do is plant the seeds for transformation that require follow-up and persistence to come to fruition.

If you’ve been trying and aren’t where you want to be, maybe it’s time to move past the self and go for the help. Support, accountability, and someone who sees your real potential can make all the difference between spinning your wheels and moving forward.

Maybe it’s the “self” that’s so problematic. It’s definitely on each of us to make the changes and do the work to get to where we want to be. But high achievers have a real issue with “I alone can do it” or “I alone *should* do it mentality that works for a while, but starts to become counterproductive after a certain point.
